Effect of the Coating Erosion on the Cold Spray Process

A. N. Papyrin, Cold Spray Technology, Albuquerque, NM; V. F. Kosarev, Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of Russian Academy of Science, Novosibirsk, Russia; D. S. V. Klinkov, Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of Russian Academy of Science, Novosibirsk, Russia

This paper presents some results of modeling of the process of erosion and its influence on the Cold Spray. Using an analytical approach, equations of the coating formation process are obtained. The approach is based on a comparison of the effect of particle adhesion to the coating with the effect of coating erosion by reflected particles under their interaction with the coating surface. The objective was to study the kinetics of coating formation. Dependences of the coating mass on time for different particle and substrate material properties and spray parameters are presented. It is shown that, under certain conditions, state of dynamic equilibrium when coating mass is not changed can be reached. These results are important for better understanding the Cold Spray process and its optimization.
