Nanomechanical Properties of Zirconia-Alumina Plasma Sprayed Nanocomposite Coatings

J. Wang, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China

To improve the properties of the Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coatings, the nanocomposites coatings (NCC) were fabricated by dispersing nano-size particles into the matrix of the coatings. Then the microstructure and nanomechanical behavior of the NCCs were investigated systematically. Compared with the conventional YSZ coatings, the hardness of the NCCs increased from 7.55GPa to11.35 GPa, and the Young’s modulus increased by 25%. Meanwhile, the ratio of elastic recovery of the NCC reached 34.0% ,which is markedly bigger than that of the conventional one.

Summary: To improve the properties of Yttria-stabilized zirconia, nanocomposite coatings were obtained by dispersing nano-size particles into the matrix of the coating and the nanomechanical behaviors of this kind of coating were studied in detail.
