The Elements of a Basic EH&S Management System for a Thermal Spray Job Shop

P. DiPietrantonio, G. Wuest, Sulzer Metco (US) Inc., Westbury, NY

One of the most important responsibilities of an employer is to assure the safety and health of their workers by setting and enforcing standards and procedures; providing training/education; and encouraging continual improvement in the environment and workplace safety and health.
The appropriate level of environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) measures within a thermal spray facility can only be assured when certain minimum technical and structural measures are present, when the organizational measures are effective, and when all co-workers are appropriately aware, trained, and competent in their execution.
The purpose of a Management System is to establish policy and define the basic measures and requirements that must be implemented and maintained at a facility.  The Management System described in this paper deals with the most relevant operations of a thermal spray business and the respective laws and industrial standards to which the facility must comply.

Summary: The hazards of thermal spray impose important responsibilities upon employers. A well implemented EH&S Management System provides the framework necessary to assure the health and safety of workers.
