Influence of Particles Size and Morphology on Cold Sprayed Coatings Microstructure

In this study, an axi-symmetric two-dimensional mathematical model is used to predict the particle velocity in the vicinity of the nozzle exit and it is compared to experimental data. The material sprayed is a high temperature aluminum alloy of the 2xxx family (2618). The aluminum powder was sieved in two different particles size distributions and also cryomilled in order to generate different morphology. The influence of particle size and morphologies was quantified and used for prediction of particle velocity and validation of the numerical model. Particle size and morphology are key issues for obtaining dense coating in cold gas dynamic spray.
