Abstract
Introduction of HVOF as a Hard Chrome Replacement on Landing Gear
For the Airbus A380, Goodrich Landing Gear introduced HVOF WC-Co-Cr coating as a replacement coating for hard chrome.  HVOF is a new coating technology for landing gear applications and has required Goodrich to develop requirements and specifications that reflect the unique requirements of landing gear components.   Specifications for coating application, finishing, powder, and supplier qualification were developed
The introduction of HVOF to landing gear has necessitated the development of requirements for the qualification of both HVOF spraying and grinding suppliers.  The size and shape of landing components, and the materials used are dissimilar to many other aerospace parts that are currently sprayed by suppliers.  This has required Goodrich to carefully assess the capabilities of each supplier, and educate both suppliers and internal customers on HVOF requirements.
This paper will discuss the development of HVOF specifications specific to Goodrich Landing Gear, the methods developed for qualifying HVOF suppliers, and the challenges encountered introducing HVOF to landing gear as a hard chrome replacement.
