Thermal Spray Coatings in the Paper Machines

H. C. Jungklaus, Voith Paper Rolls, Laakirchen, Austria; P. S. Haller, Voith Paper Rolls, Portland, OR

Demanding sales situations, the growing globalisation and changing markets force paper makers more than ever before to optimise their production process. With a worldwide consumption of more than 500 mio. tons of paper, board and tissue annually the western market does not show any significant growth since years. Consumers behavior in the Asian markets do lead to a turbulent extension of the local production capacities, which calms down temporarely due to the actual resource and energy situation. Independent of the production location the increase in efficieny drives the profit in this investment intensive business. Cost optimizing also for the production machines together with quality improvement and smarter solutions are the duties to be fullfilled by the machine builders. Voith Paper answers this request with the „One platform concept“ in modular design, which can be taylor suited according to the customer’s demands on his end product. A significant part of the efficient paper making are functional surfaces, especially on roll bodies, which must fullfill various tasks. Increasingly thermal spray coatings do enter the area of paper machines. This presentation describes the application of selected thermal spray coatings, especially developed to improve the paper production.

Summary: Increasing demands in terms of wear resistance, corrosion protection and other functional properties on roll surfaces lead to highly sophisticated thermal spray coatings in paper machines. The presentation shows on examples various demanding requests and their solutions by thermal spray appliactions.
