Evaluation of Adhesion/Cohesion of Plasma Sprayed Ceramic Coatings by Scratch Testing

S. W. Lee, H. Chen, J. Zhang, Sun Moon University, Asan, South Korea

Plasma sprayed ceramic coatings have been widely applied in modifying surface properties of metal components. It is useful to prevent various types of wear, corrosion, erosion and thermal, thereby extending components service life and reducing the need for expensive and repetitive maintenance. In this works, both nanostructural and conventional ceramic coatings (Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2 and WC-12%Co) were prepared by atmospheric spraying technology. The plasma sprayed nanostructured coatings were deposited using nanoparticles as feedstock. The adhesion/cohesion of all of the plasma sprayed ceramic coatings was evaluated by scratch testing method. It was performed on both top surface and cross-section of the plasma sprayed ceramic coatings using the Revetest Scratch Tester. In summary, scratch testing is a simple, effective and promising method to evaluate adhesion/cohesion characteristics of plasma sprayed ceramic coatings.
