A New Device for the Characterization of Particle Injection in Thermal Spray Processes

L. Pouliot, A. Nadeau, F. Nadeau, Tecnar Automation Ltee, Saint-Bruno, QC, Canada; J. Blain, Tecnar Automation Ltée, St-Bruno, QC, Canada

It is a well-know fact that the way particles are actually injected into thermal spray streams has a significant impact on their in-flight properties, and as such directly influences deposit efficiency and coating microstructure.  A new device is presented that allows for both visual and quantitative characterization of the injection zone(s).  Application case studies are presented that cover various injection strategies typically used in the thermal spray industry.

Summary: A new device is presented that allows for on-line characterization of particle injection in thermal spray processes.
