PEN Fabricated by Hybrid Process of APS and SPS for SOFC

X. Weisheng, Z. Haiou, W. Guilan, Z. Yandong, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China

Suspension Plasma Spray (SPS) and Atmosphere Plasma Spray (APS) were alternately applied to prepare PEN(Positive- Electrolyte-Negative)of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) in the paper. Cathode and anode layers were sprayed with APS process, and SPS was selected for the electrolyte layer. Metallographic microscope and ESEM were selected to analyze the cross-section pattern, surface pattern of anode, cathode and electrolyte layers of resulting PEN, and AC complex impedance technology for the electrical conductivity of samples. Experimental results show that the electrolyte layer fabricated by the hybrid process of APS and SPS represents higher densification, thinner thickness and more homogeneous component distribution than that manufactured totally by APS. Moreover, conductivity of electrolyte was effectively improved, and could meet microstructure and porosity requirements of SOFC stacks. All mentioned above proved that the hybrid process of APS and SPS is a better approach to fabricate PEN of SOFC stacks.
