Influence of primary grain size on wear and mechanical properties of HVOF carbide coatings

M. Oechsle, Sulzer Metco WOKA GmbH, Barchfeld, Germany

Thermal spray applications require economic solutions. Beside the wear properties more and more also the surface texture in as sprayed condition becomes important in order to reduce the finishing effort for grinding and superfinishing. Coatings sprayed with different grain size distribution and primary grain sizes have been classified considering coating hardness and micro sections. The wear properties of these coatings were examined to define the influence of the primary grain size on the abrasion resistance according to test procedure ASTM B 65. The samples have been sprayed with both liquid and gas HVOF torches. The surface roughness of these samples has been measured in as sprayed and finished condition.
