Properties of Al2O3-TiO2 Coating Deposited by Low Power Plasma Spraying

F. Zhou, Y. Fu, Y. Gao, Dalian Maritime University, Dalian, China

Al2O3-TiO2 coatings were prepared using two spray-dried powders as feedstock materials with different TiO2 content by low power plasma thermal spraying (2.5-4W). To achieve interesting photo-catalytic properties, TiO2 must be in the anatase phase. The effects of the powder characteristics and the plasma conditions on the anatase ratio and porosity rate of the coatings were investigated by many techniques, respectively X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscope. To better qualify the characteristics of these coatings prepared from spray-dried powders, microhardness was also studied. The optimum spraying conditions have been established by analyzing the relation of the main phase of TiO2 with spray parameters.
