Influence of Annealing Treatment on the Photocatalytic Performance of the Nanostructured TiO2 Coating Deposited by Vacuum Cold Spray

G. J. Yang, C. J. Li, L. Z. Zhang, C. X. Li, X. M. Wang, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China; S. Q. Fan, School of Science, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China

Composite powder in sub-micrometer size was prepared using nano-TiO2 powder and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The nano-TiO2 coating was deposited through vacuum cold spray using both the composite powder and nano-TiO2 powder. The coating adhesion was estimated through erosion test by flowing water. The photocatalytic performance of the TiO2 coatings was evaluated through photodegradation of phenol in water. The results showed that the photocatalytic activity of nano-TiO2 coating was increased with the increase of annealing temperature from 300 to 450oC and then tended to decrease with further increase of temperature to 600 oC. A better adhesion was achieved when the coating was annealed at temperature from 450 to 500 oC. The adhesion of the coatings deposited with composite powder was better than primary nano-TiO2 powder. It is found that nanostructured TiO2 coating deposited through vacuum cold spray is a promising photocatalyst in the application to water purification.
