DYMET Technology Evolution and Application

A. Shkodkin, D. A. Kashirin, D. O. Klyuev, T. Buzdygar, Obninsk Center for Powder Spraying, Obninsk, Russia

DYMET technology, developed as attempt to reduce Cold Gas Dynamic Spray processing requirements to common compressed air at pressures below 1 MPa, has provided the possibility of wide application of Gas Dynamic Spray (GDS) to industrial and restoration processes. In the 10 years DYMET equipment evolved from large cumbersome machine for the thick aluminum coating spraying to compact portable equipment for various applications. Modern technology is widely used for renewal and restoration of machine parts, local corrosion protection, moldings modification and other purposes. Up to date portable DYMET equipment is employed by several hundreds of repair shops and manufacturing plants in Russia.

The evolution of equipment and technology as well as modern portable equipment are described and discussed. Process requirements and nozzle, air heater, powder feeders description are presented.

Various applications of the technology by the portable equipment are presented and illustrated, including molds modification, metal parts restoration, casting defects removal, local corrosion protection, antique art objects restoration.
