HVOF sprayed hard metal coatings are used to prevent wear and corrosion of engineering components. For applications, where oil lubrication is limited or totally prevented, e.g. in dry sliding or in high temperature conditions, the development of self-lubricating coatings with solid lubricants is a potential answer to industry’s increasing demand. Solid lubricants can be used as thin films on surfaces or another possibility is to incorporate the solid lubricating agent into the coating composition. In HVOF spraying, the solid lubricant should be integrated into the individual spray powder particles, because despite the relatively low flame temperature, the separate solid lubricant powder particles can still evaporate during spraying.

In this paper, the solid lubricant containing HVOF sprayed coatings are studied. Coatings are sprayed with the experimental powders, in which the solid lubricant phases are integrated inside the particles. Coating microstructure is studied by OM and SEM, and phase structure by XRD. Wear and friction tests are also carried out to study the influence of added solid lubricants to the coatings properties. The results will be presented and discussed.
