Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have been attracting rapidly increasing interest during the last decade because of their high efficiency and environmental safety. Recently apatite-type lanthanum silicates and germinates of general formula La10-x(RO4)6O3-1.5x (R=Si and Ge) are considered as electrolyte exhibiting high oxide ion conductivity at intermediate temperature (600–800°C) and low activation energies associated with the migration of oxygen ions. In this work, we propose air plasma spray to successfully synthesize Lanthanum silicates coatings using stoichiometric La2O3 and SiO2 as precursors. The main advantage of using high temperature plasma is to increasing the reaction speed and to directly synthesize La10Si6O27 in comparison to the conventional solid state or sol-gel methods.
