Dense, thin coatings can be produced using fine and nano powders with the axial plasma injection and automatic slurry feed system. Fine powders can be used in this application which gives more control of the microstructure to the coatings formulator. More parameters need to be controlled in the manufacturing of these coatings, but good quality control systems can monitor all of these parameters to ensure the highest level of quality consistency. These coatings expand the use of thermal spray into new markets and/or give much more flexibility to the coating formulator to improve the performance of coatings in traditional markets. Specific examples will be discussed.
