This paper reports an application of surface nanocrystallization technology on AISI52100 steel roll. A nanocrystalline surface layer of about 5 μm thick was fabricated on a AISI52100 steel roll by means of supersonic fine particles bombarding. the microhardness measurement of the sample indicated that a work hardening layer of about 100 μm thick formed in the surface of AISI52100 steel roll. Tribological experiments showed that after SFPB treatment, the wear resistance of AISI52100 steel roll increased. the improvement of wear resistance may be attributed to the hardened surface layer which caused an obvious change in wear mechanisms of AISI52100 steel roll.
