To apply an HVOF coating onto a component it is common to move the torch with a defined velocity along an axis and rotate the part around the same axis with another rotational speed. The result is a constant build-up of the coating and a homogeneous heat distribution in the coated area. That is the state-of-the-art procedure to cover external surfaces with HVOF coatings.

But what if it is not possible to rotate the part, due to its dimensions, heavy weight or an asymmetric location of the coating-area? Or what if it is an internal surface of a temperature sensitive component?

Yes, but what if…

What if it is possible to rotate the HVOF torch around an external surface of a static part, or even in the inside of a component’s bore?

New rotational HVOF equipment enables a very safe supply of process gases and Kerosene, chilling Water, powder and compressed air through a Rotational-Media-Transfer-Unit (RMTU), so that the torch can spray, while it is rotating. The rotational speed of the torch and the distance to the axis of rotation is adjustable, so that it is possible to coat inside diameters in a range of 120 mm to 1200 mm, even in a depth of 1500 mm. A special torch design, optimized for ultrafine powder materials allows coating a component without extra cooling, while the substrate temperature is < 177 °C
(WC-CoCr on 300M).

This technology was developed for Landing Gear Applications. To comply with highest quality and safety requirements The RMTU is part of a complete Turn-Key System, including special control and visualization units with Application-based Software, Powder Feeder, ID or OD torches, ultrafine and spherodized powder materials and special, rotational HVOF training and Know-How.
