Abstract:   This case study is result of an investigation of HVOF Cr3C2/NiCr coating failure on a on-off  valve used in supercritical steam line in a power plant in Texas and solution.  The HVOF coating is used in thousands of valves without incident, however in this case the valve is challenged with exposure to rapid high pressure and temperature resulting in unique situation where the coating experiences cracking and delamination.  A detailed investigation was undertaken by Velan, Deloro Stellite, Université of Montreal and National Research Council of Canada to determine possible cause and develop a solution in which highlights are presented.
