High temperature performance of NiCr/Cr3C2-BaF2∙CaF2 composite coating prepared by detonation spraying was experimentally investigated. Tribological behavior of the coating under high temperature was studied with a high temperature friction and wear tester. The microstructure and phase compositions of the coating were characterized and analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A micro-indenter was used to study the microhardness of the coating. Both a three-dimensional white-light interfering profilometer and SEM were used to study the morphology of the wear scar. Influence of temperature on the performance of the coating was studied, and the oxidation mechanism was analyzed. The results show that friction and wear behavior of the NiCr/Cr3C2-BaF2∙CaF2 coating is significantly influenced by temperature. The role of the lubricating phase BaF2∙CaF2 eutectic in the coating which played under different temperature was analyzed.
