Mr. Mitchell R Dorfman , Oerlikon Metco (US) Inc., Westbury, NY
The market need for increased engine efficiency and environmentally friendly solutions remain the key drivers for the aerospace industry. These efficiency gains will be achieved by meeting the challenges of higher engine operating temperatures, new lighter weight components and the surface solutions required for increased component longevity. Key questions will be if the Thermal Spray industry can continue to meet the challenges and demands seen by the airlines and engine manufacturers. As seen in years past with other external influences outside of the aerospace industry, COVID-19 has dramatically effected the landscape of industry growth, not only for the airlines but for all parts of the supply chain associated with this industry. This presentation will look at this market, its suppliers, and review the challenges and opportunities for future growth. Key focus will be on Thermal Spray Technology and what will be required to bring reliable and robust cost-effective solutions into the marketplace. We will review the global landscape by looking at several important issues effecting the aerospace industry: 1) Fuel consumption / emissions, 2) Potential ways to reduce total flight operation cost, 3) Improved maintenance intervals between component repair (just in time production / more robust solutions), and 4) Proper behavior of society and people (training, technology transfer, and government regulations). Key question to address is if Thermal Spray has the ability to speed up development with our supplier base and commercialize technology more efficiently.
