Dr. Lucas Adler , Hermle Maschinenbau GmbH, Ottobrunn, Germany
The metal powder application (MPA) process from Hermle combines an additive material buildup by means of cold gas spraying (CGS) with subtractive material removal by combining it with a 5-axis CNC milling center in a hybrid machine concept. This chains rapid material build-up using CGS with high-precision machining using CNC. A specially developed CAD/CAM software, which, in addition to a layer-by-layer analysis of the processing steps required for material build-up and removal, also enables a build simulation of the components prior to processing. The use of superheated steam as process gas for CGS is a unique feature of the MPA process and enables the processing of demanding materials such as martensitic steels. A water-soluble filler material allows the creation of close contour cooling channels. With the ability to use multiple powder feeders during the build job, multimaterial parts are possible, which can be utilized in parts with innovative thermal management or local strengthening. During the lecture, the state of the art of MPA technology and selected applications in toolmaking will be presented. To give an impression of where MPA is heading, ongoing R&D activities will be introduced.
