Innovative cored wire feedstock containing Ni-30Cr wire strip and proprietary core powders was successfully designed and fabricated to reactively produce NbC reinforced Ni alloy composite during laser cladding. Thermodynamic calculations were performed using computer program HSC to calculate the stoichiometry of the cored wire feedstock to reactively form the NbC composite during the laser cladding process. SEM-EDS analysis confirmed the formation of NbC within the Ni alloy cladding. NbC particles were fine and ranged from 1 to 5 micrometers and revealed petaloid like structure. Hardness and wear test results revealed ~75% superior performance in comparison to Ni-30Cr cladding.
