Cemented carbides have long been utilized as hard and tough materials in demanding applications; critical components can be protected by applying a wear resistant coating. While there are many uses for these materials, an expanding number of applications have requirements for improved corrosion and oxidation. Additionally, many OEMs working to be compliant with REACH regulations need suitable materials to replace Cr-plate and other coatings. Several complex carbide materials have been produced that offer unique properties. Because they are not traditional stoichiometric carbides with relatively coarse grains, they are less abrasive to mating surfaces causing less total system wear. The novel coating microstructure holds the fine carbide grains and better protects the hard phase from environmental oxidation. The powder is formulated to offer a high deposition efficiency in multiple thermal spray processes aiding to overall sustainability.
