Cyclic Properties of Superelastic Nitinol Tubing

X. Y. Gong, A. R. Pelton, T. Duerig, Nitinol Devices & Components, Fremont, CA; A. Hall, J. Nelsen, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA

Cyclic properties of superelastic Nitinol tubing of Austenite finish (Af) temperature 30C are evaluated by means of uniaxial tension tests at the body temperature of 37C. The tests are performed under strain-controlled conditions with alternating strain magnitude from 0.2% to 1.0% under mean strains range from 0.5% to 9% up to 1000 cycles. The key quantities such as the stress-strain slopes and the maximum and the minimum stresses during the cycles are reported. These results lead to better understanding of superelastic Nitinol’s fatigue behavior.
