The introduction of implantable medical devices into the body has been shown to greatly increase the risk of infection. Not only are the number of bacteria required to cause an infection reduced by certain biomaterials , but also the persistence of bacteria is enhanced. Coatings containing nanocrystalline silver can provide sustained delivery of silver ions, which possess antimicrobial and antiinflammatory properties. Functionally gradient diamondlike carbon (DLC)-silver nanocomposite coatings have been created using pulsed laser deposition. Examination of the Raman spectra revealed a reduction of compressive stresses for these DLC nanocomposites. Wear tests reveal exceptional wear properties. The antimicrobial properties of DLC/silver nanocomposite coatings were demonstrated using Staphylococcus aureus.
