Medical Device Failures – Can We Learn from Our Mistakes?

L. E. Eiselstein, B. James, Exponent Failure Analysis Associates, Menlo Park, CA

This paper will review case histories of failures that have helped to shape the medical device industry. Case histories will include failure analyses of pacemakers, heart valves and other implantable devices. The FDA’s role and response to these failures will also be discussed. Additionally, we will examine the lessons learned and what engineering techniques can be used to help avoid future device failures.
