Overview:

The symposium features an emphasis on understanding failures and their consequences. One session will be devoted entirely to a single failure - the breakup of the space shuttle Columbia. An entire day will be spent on corrosion, estimated to cost the U.S. alone over $275 million per year. Process-related failures resulting from heat treatment will be covered in another session. Better understanding of material behavior in the cause of prediction and prevention of failure using computational and other modeling tools will be presented. And finally, one session will explore the inevitable relationship between failures and litigation.
