Overview:

Homeland defense and homeland security are highly challenging and complex tasks. The responsibility for these rests not only with a number of government agencies charged with meeting the nation's security needs, but also with all scientific, engineering and medical communities that develop and bring new technologies to the market. Advances in materials science and technology will enable the design of new systems for first responders and for our troops in the battlefield and sensors and detectors for urban environments. Research on advanced ceramics, polymers, nanostructured substances and other functional materials such as filters, plastics, coatings on surfaces, nanoparticle reactants/protectants in fibers and textiles are presented.
