Thermal Sprayed Polymeric Coatings for Landing Gear

G. D. Davis, DACCO SCI, INC., Columbia, MD; R. A. Zatorski, Zatorski Coating Company, East Hampton, CT

Landing gears are subject to corrosion and other damage due to aggressive environments and to foreign object debris found on runways. An effective, protective coating is needed that is both impact resistant and corrosion resistant. Thermally sprayed EAA (ethylene acrylic acid) coatings exhibit impact and corrosion protection superior to that of the current coating. No damage to the EAA coating is seen following impact of gravel traveling up to 90 mph (144 km/hr). No corrosion is seen on these gravel-impacted specimens following salt fog exposure of 1500 hours. The EAA coating offers several advantages compared to the conventional paint coating in addition to impact and corrosion performance. These include: elimination of chromates and VOCs and potential elimination of cadmium plating with significant reduction of health/safety issues, easy visual inspection of underlying substrate because EAA is clear, easy repair with minimal preparation, and easy application with minimal training and facility or safety requirements.
