NORSOK M-650 is the Norwegian standard for the qualification of suppliers of special materials. The standard seeks to ensure that those suppliers of components in Duplex and Super Austenitic Stainless Steels, Nickel Base and Titanium and its Alloys, are competent. The standard operates on a qualification basis, NORSOK do not approve manufacturers, it is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that their supplier is qualified.

To be qualified the manufacturer must show knowledge and experience in the handling of special materials, have acceptable manufacturing facilities, procedures, and a quality system which complies with the ISO 9000 series. Qualification test samples must meet the requirements of the material data sheets. The final phase of the qualification process is the compilation of a ‘Qualification Test Record’ for approval by the customer.
