Corrosion Failure Case Studies

D. Aliya, Aliya Analytical, Inc., Grand Rapids, MI

Visual examination, background data collection, optical metallography, scanning electron microscopy and EDS microchemical analysis were all used to determine characteristics of the corrosion processes which caused failure. Sometimes it is not possible to determine with certainty what the cause(s) of the corrosion were. It may still be possible to provide prevention advice, tailored to the situation.

Summary: Case studies of corroded plumbing components will be presented. The importance of understanding the environment in which the component functions, and how that might influence evidence preservation protocols will be emphasized.
