Sandia National Laboratories have been working with hydrogen and hydrides research since 1960s. Our expertise and core competence in hydrogen effects in metals and hydrogen storage using hydrides has been established and recognized by the researchers in the scientific communities through publications in technical journals, presentations in technical conferences and demonstrated hydrogen storage hardware in many applications. In recent years, we are one of the major DOE laboratories working on R&D of lightweight reversible hydrides for on board vehicular applications. Our goal is to meet and/or exceed the DOE 2010 hydrogen storage goals on specific weight and volume requirements. This paper will describe the philosophy and approaches that guide us in the search of lightweight reversible hydrides. Examples of recent accomplishments and work in progress toward the DOE goals will also be presented.
Summary: Research and development efforts searching for light weight solid state hydrogen storage materials at Sandia National Laboratories will be presented with up-to-date accomplishments.
