Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of AA6061 SPD Processed by Multi-Axial Compressions (MAC)

B. Cherukuri, R. Srinivasan, Wright State University, Dayton, OH

Severe plastic deformation (SPD) to large strains can result in Ultra fine grain (UFG) material. UFG material exhibits increased strength at lower temperatures, while making the material more formable at elevated temperatures. Multi axial compression (MAC), as a SPD technique, is used to obtain fine grain structure in AA6061. Over-aged samples of AA6061 were deformed to an accumulated strain between 4 and 5.8. Results will include the as-processed microstructure and the stability of the microstructure at elevated temperatures. The variation of microhardness with accumulated strain, the flow behavior of the MAC processed material determined through tension and compression tests at different strain rates and temperatures will be presented.

Summary: The variation of microhardness with accumulated strain, the flow behavior of the MAC processed material determined through tension and compression tests at different strain rates and temperatures will be presented.
