INVITED: Challenges of Bridging the Science and Manufacturing of Utility Gas Turbine Components

B. B. Seth, Siemens-Westinghouse Power Corporation, Orlando, FL

The inlet temperature and size of gas turbines have been steadily increasing creating a need for advanced (a) directionally solidified and single crystal airfoils (b) thermal barrier coatings and (c) inspection and repair techniques. The larger sizes of components create unique manufacturing challenges that cannot be met merely by trial and error. Alternate approaches based on scientific principles and computer modeling are essential. Advanced material needs, manufacturing challenges and potential solutions are discussed.
