Abstract : VEGETAL OIL VS MINERAL OIL

The aim of this paper is to investigate the results in distortion and mechanical properties on quenched parts when they are quenched in vegetable oil as well as mineral oil during production processes using  the same installation of heat treatment and quench

The work concerns quenched and tempered steels (like AISI 4140) and case-hardening steels (like AISI 5120 and AISI 4820).

The first part of this work is showing the analysis of hardening penetration for which we want to see if vegetable oil gives better microstructures and mechanical properties than mineral oil.

All the trials have been done in a quench tank where the vegetable oil is still being used since 10 years.

The second part of the work is showing the results of vegetable oil in quenching as far as microstructure, mechanical properties and mainly distortions are concerned in comparison to mineral oil.

In this case the quench tank used for the trials is using a vegetal oil in a continuous production line working since 8 months.

Conclusion: The work carried out is not showing only the part’s behavior between two quenchants as far as distortion and mechanical properties are concerned, but also showing the rate of degradation of quenching media to understand as well the real lifespan of vegetable oil compare to mineral oil.
