Machining of Depleted Uranium Using Coated Cutting Tools

Summary: This paper describes the machining of depleted uranium using a variety of titanium based coated cutting tools. The paper describes the machining characteristics of DU in addition to the type of tool wear encountered during rough and finish machining operations. Tool life exhibits a 300% increase when using yttrium-doped titanium coatings.
