Summary: Cadmium coating has been extensively used for steel in aerospace and automobile industries owing to its excellent corrosion resistance. However, due to restrictions on Cd, alternate coatings are being actively explored. The commonly used sacrificial coatings in place are Zinc and Zn-alloys (i.e. with Fe, Co and Ni). Under the corroding conditions Zinc corrodes rapidly once the coating is breached. Alloying Zn with Co and Fe has mitigated this problem.
