Enhanced Corrosion Resistance of Low Temperature Carburized Stainless Steel

S. V. Marx, Swagelok Company, Solon, OH

View in WORD format

Summary: Low temperature carburization creates a conformal case on austenitic stainless steels with enhanced hardness, wear resistance, and in particular corrosion resistance. Results of standard ASTM corrosion tests performed on treated and untreated 316L show significant improvements in general, pitting, and crevice corrosion resistance.
