Summary: Amorphous aluminum coatings have great potential for wear and corrosion resistance. Coatings based upon the Al-Y-Co-Ni system can attain hardness values as high as 400 HVN and excellent resistance to salt fog corrosion. However, the coatings exhibit a wide range of microstructures and this paper examines the cause of these inhomogeneities.
