Summary: A low-temperature carburizing process for hardening the surface of Type 316 stainless steel was developed by Swagelok Corporation. Several types of hardness and wear tests were conducted to determine the degree to which this 'colossal supersaturation' process improves properties. Significant improvements were obtained.
