Mechanical Testing Devices for Characterizing Stents

J. Simons, D. Shockey, SRI International, Menlo Park, CA

As part of the RESIStent consortium working to improve the durability of Nitinol stents in the superficial femoral artery (SFA), SRI is developing test devices to characterize the mechanical response of Nitinol stents under simple loading conditions. The hig compliance of the stents puts strict requirements on the devices for minimizing friction and measuring low loads. We describe devices for loading stents in simple axial, torsion and bending; each has a micrometer and in-line load cell for measuring displacements and loads. These portable devices have been designed to fit into a high resolution C-Arm CT scanning system to obtain three-dimensional image data of the deformed stents under load. We will show representative results for stents along with 3-D images. Together these results including loads, displacements and deformations can be used to help validate and further develop the finite element analyses (FEA) codes that are used to analyze and design stents.

Summary: Nitinol stent testing devices are presented for loading stents in simple axial, torsion and bending modes.
