Development of Functional Fluid using Shape Memory Alloy

I. Kataoka, K. Yoshida, Osaka Univeristy, Osaka, Japan

The result of the research and development of various functional and intelligent fluids and their thermo-hydrodynamic characteristics were reported.  The inverse natural convective fluid was developed using the functional particles composed of shape memory alloy spring.    It is confirmed that inverse natural convection occurred when these particles are submerged in the water with thermally stratified temperature field.     Another type of particle was also developed which falls and rises in the water pool changing its buoyancy.   It can be applied to mixing of thermally stratified water in pond or lake.   Also developed are the particles which change their movements depending upon the temperature or light intensity of surrounding water.   These particles act as functional fluid which detects hot spot and cool down or detects leakage of pipe and stop it.   Heat transfer and hydrodynamic characteristics of these functional and intelligent particles were measured analyzed.
