Smoke Isolation Shutter Using Shape Memory Alloy Coil Spring

At the time of fire outbreak, smoke is real dangerous. When the sprinklers operate in the event of a fire, smoke increases although flame fades away. The rising flow of smoke occurs by chimney effect at a spot such as an elevator space and high temperature smoke blows rapidly up to upper floors. This high temperature smoke makes impossible escape from the spot and causes human life to be fatal.

The smoke isolation shutter, which can be isolated from smoke, has been developed. The smoke isolation shutter is mounted above the elevator doorframe. This shutter, which is constructed of a heat-resistant and smoke-resistant screen with gum magnets above both sides of doorframe, acts upon the detection of smoke. However, the decrease of magnetic force due to the high temperature smoke leads to the decrease of the performance of the smoke isolation system. Authors have proposed the smoke isolation shutter using shape memory alloy (SMA) coil spring. The proposed system is that SMA coil spring is mounted on the screen with magnets and the screen is fixed to the elevator doorframe by the deformation force of SMA coil spring. As a result, it is confirmed that SMA coil spring is able to fix the smoke isolation screen to the elevator doorframe under high temperature circumstance. In this work, the smoke isolation system, the deformation behavior of shape memory alloy coil spring under high temperature conditions and the process of coil spring will be introduced.


Summary: Authors have proposed the smoke isolation shutter using shape memory alloy (SMA) coil spring.
