A Method to Locally Modify Shape Memory and Pseudoelastic Properties

M. I. Khan, N. Y. Zhou, Univeristy of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada

The capability to locally embed multiple memories in a monolithic sheet has the potential to greatly increase the functionality on Nitinol. For example, actuators and micro-grippers have been designed based on monolithic nitinol having locally modified intrinsic properties. However, complications associated with current processing/fabrication processes have restricted the development of these devices. The current paper describes a technology capable of embedding multiple memories in a single monolithic shape memory alloy. Furthermore, this technology can be implemented in locally disable pseudoelastic properties.

Summary: The current paper describes a new technology developed at the University of Waterloo which enables one to embed multiple memories into a monolithic shape memory alloy.
