Micro-Welding Ni-Rich NiTi

M. I. Khan, Univeristy of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada; B. Tam, Y. Zhou, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada

The excellent corrosion resistant Ni-rich NiTi alloys possess the versatile pseudoelastic properties. However, challenges associated with micro-welding of nitinol have severely impeded its integration into many practical applications. In turn, design engineers have been restricted from taking full advantage of its unique properties. The current study details and compares the effect of laser and resistance micro-welding of nitinol alloys. Results showed process parameters can greatly influence the structure and properties of nitinol weld.

Summary: The current study details the effect of laser and resistance welding of nickel rich nitinol
