Shape Setting: Salt Bath Vs. Fluidized Bed

M. Bartning, C. Thomas, Medtronic Vascular, Santa Rosa, CA

The objective of this study is to compare the resultant surface of nitinol (Ni-50.8 at%Ti) post heat treatment using different methods. Wire samples were exposed to 500ºC for common processing times in a fluidized bed or a salt bath. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the surface appearance, colors and oxide thickness of each method. The thickness increases with treatment time and with use of a fluidized bed over a salt bath.

Summary: Samples of NiTi wire were heat treated for various times at 500C to study the resulting surfaces. Analysis includes optical microscopy and BSE.
