The NiTi SMA Wire Drawability as a Function of Drawing Temperature and Phases Presents

L. K. Kabayama, J. Otubo, Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica (ITA)., São José dos Campos,SP., Brazil; O. D. Rigo, Centro Tecnológico da Marinha, São Paulo - SP, Brazil

It is a common sense that the mechanical properties of NiTi shape memory alloys (SMA) is state variable which by its turns is temperature dependent. The same alloy could present shape memory, superelasticity and conventional deformation by dislocation slip depending upon the deformation temperature. This work will analyze the drawability of NiTi alloy focusing on the number of drawing pass that the wire can withstand to rupture and stress necessary for each pass for one specific composition varying the drawing temperature. The second experience will involve several compositions for one specific drawing temperature, also taking into account the number of drawing pass and stress. The drawing process will be done on a tensile machine recording the drawing stress for each condition. The microstructure and elastic shape recovery will also be analyzed.

Summary: This work analyze the formability of NiTi SMA by wire drawing process.
