Recent advances in new thin film deposition and characterisation techniques will be discussed, focusing on the new tools for functionally graded, or nanosculptured films, as well as novel crystalline microstructures, and in-situ characterisation techniques. The novel properties of thin films SMAs in micro-and nanoscale characterisation was summarised, including recoverable surface morphologis, shape recovery, superelasticity, wear/friction/corrosion/fatigue properties. Novel ideas of functionally graded, nanosculptured coating design, in-situ microactuator (such as stent) formation have been introduced. A few key applications into biology, micro-nano-manufacturing, MEMS and nano-manipulations have been explored.
