ASTM Committee E08.05.07 is developing new test methods to define the thermomechanical behavior of shape memory alloys (SMA).  This work was started by the Aerospace Vehicle Systems Institute (AVSI) as a first step to document the flight readiness of SMA components for aircraft and deep space vehicles. Procedures and calibrations will be explained for using strain gage extensometers in non-isothermal tests. Data will be presented showing the correlations between differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), uniaxial prestrain and free recovery (UPFR) and uniaxial constant force thermal cycling (UCFTC) tests for two binary NiTi alloys with As (fully annealed) at -25oC and at +95oC.
